Perfect Liars Club at Good Heavens Tokyo, January 17th 2020
New year cheer was promised and new year cheer was what rang out in the crowd of the first perfect liars club of the decade. And the happiness stayed even though our liar was triumphant.
We had four stories full of new beginnings. There was a tale of being given rabies by a kitten and receiving treatment just in the nick of time. A tale of a serendipitous dinner date with Stephen Hawking, TWICE!! There were continuous loops of despair and obstacles as a newly wed attempted to reunite with his wife. And finally, we had the tale of the knife-wielding hitchhiker who freaked out her driver who was in rebirthing therapy. Lessons were learnt and new beginnings were born, so to speak.
The audience were all pointing to the looping newlywed before the interrogation, right up until the final two questions of the interrogation and then the field was even and open. Alex, why would Stephen Hawking visit the worst house in the campus and what did you talk about? Paul, What were you doing in the circus and how can you return a car rental without giving in the keys? Ellen, most people only get rebirthed once, why did he have to go more than once? And possibly my favourite question of the night…Elizabeth, a chicken foot is bigger than a kittens mouth, how did it fit in such a small mouth?
The Sleuthers were torn. They voted Elizabeth and her tale of emergency evacuation out of Africa for rabies treatment as least likely to be lying, followed by a joint second place with Alex with his two-times dinner date with Stephen Hawking and Ellen, with her rebirthing classified ads driver and being abandoned at a gas station. But with just 1 vote difference, Paul was voted most likely to be lying his looping traffic misadventures in his quest to reunite with his new bride.
The drumroll was a defiant hum to the ears as the Sleuthers sought answers. And they certainly got them, as Ellen graciously slipped forward and the first perfect liar of 2020 was born.
Opportunity is reborn next month and the Sleuthers get another chance at spotting the liar in the Love Edition Special.
Sleuth them, sleuths them not? We’ll find out on February 21st when we celebrate all kinds of love.
